This funding is part of a larger investment of $625 million under the Safe Restart Agreement to address key child care priorities agreed to by Canada`s First Ministers for a safe restart of the Canadian economy over the next six to eight months. Together with the Multilateral Early Learning and Child Care Framework agreements, this investment means that the Canadian government will invest nearly $1.2 billion in 2020-2021 to support child care, a 67% increase from the very best year in history, 2005-2006, when $700 million was announced. It recognizes that transit is an essential service and will allow us to continue to provide reliable service levels to our region to support BC`s secure restart, especially in the coming months as our economy gradually reopens and our customers use transit on a more regular basis. The funding also allows us to continue our improved public health and safety actions in transit and to ensure that we can maintain a good state of repair across the region`s entire transportation network. Canadians have been well served by the strong and cooperative efforts of Prime Ministers during the COVID-19 pandemic. All Premiers reaffirm their commitment to this approach, while continuing to focus on their shared priority of the well-being and safety of all Canadians. The province says it has worked closely with authorities to fully understand the financial impact of the pandemic on its operation, including additional COVID-19 safety measures and measures to keep rates affordable.
